Robert Easom, a 57-year-old man from Chipping near Preston, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for a vicious attack that left his partner, Trudi Burgess, paralysed. The assault followed her decision to end their relationship. After the attack on 17 February 2025, Easom dialed 999 and claimed that Trudi had fallen out of bed, injuring her neck. However, authorities described the incident as the culmination of an extensive and terrifying pattern of abuse.
Lancashire Police revealed Easom had subjected Trudi to an unrelenting eight years of coercive and controlling behaviour, along with both verbal and physical abuse. Easom admitted to coercive control spanning from July 2017 to February 2025 and was also convicted of two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Throughout their relationship, Trudi kept detailed notes of the abuse in her phone, documenting everything from serious physical assaults to what she termed “low-level events” that had become a distressing everyday reality.
Trudi described living through a recurrent cycle in which Easom would be verbally or physically abusive, then shift to being apologetic and affectionate. Incidents included him forcing her to clean up spilled food, pushing her against furniture, yelling at her, driving erratically to intimidate her and even headbutting her. Police stated that about seven months into their relationship, Easom’s temper could abruptly escalate; during a visit to York, he violently dragged her around a bathroom and threatened her, quoting a line from the film *Rambo*: “Don’t push or I’ll give you a war.” Though he sometimes appeared remorseful and begged her not to leave, the abuse intensified with episodes such as forcibly grabbing her wine glass and dragging her upstairs by her head, banging it against the steps, as well as strangling her under a bedsheet in 2021.
On the night of the final attack, after Trudi had told Easom she wanted to end their relationship, he severely assaulted her, causing catastrophic injuries. In a statement read in court, Trudi revealed she underwent an 11-hour surgery and spent the following three months in critical care, unable to breathe unaided or communicate effectively. “I was trapped in a broken body,” she said, also describing Easom as having a “true Jekyll and Hyde personality,” capable of turning from a loving partner into a “monster.” Detective Constable Bethanie Kirk characterized Easom as a “manipulative, controlling and cowardly individual with a warped sense of entitlement and repulsive views towards women,” noting the profound and lasting impact his actions have had on Trudi and her family. She expressed hope that Trudi’s story would encourage others trapped in abusive relationships to reach out to the police for support and protection
