A man armed with a machete has been sentenced to prison following a fatal incident in Sittingbourne, Kent. The victim, Jay Gerrett, died after being struck by a vehicle while trying to escape from the attacker. Chris Maclean, 43, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with the case, along with charges of knife possession and cocaine supply.
The tragic event took place on the evening of August 2, 2025, near St Michael’s Road. It began when Maclean’s co-defendant, Jack Hunt, attempted to sell drugs to Gerrett. The situation escalated into a confrontation, prompting Hunt to call for assistance. Maclean and another man joined the fray, both reportedly emerging from their homes on Pembury Court.
During the altercation, Maclean provoked Gerrett into a fight and brandished a large knife, swinging it at him. Gerrett tried to flee but fell onto a grass verge and was subsequently hit by a car, resulting in fatal injuries. Following the incident, Maclean was apprehended in Canterbury with a quantity of Class A drugs found on his person.
At Maidstone Crown Court, Maclean received a 16-year prison sentence. He had originally been scheduled to face trial for murder; however, the Crown Prosecution Service accepted his manslaughter plea. Meanwhile, the other defendants involved faced different outcomes. Jack Hunt, 33, admitted to supplying cocaine and is awaiting sentencing. Another defendant, Daniel Martin, along with Hunt, was acquitted of murder after the prosecution withdrew their case against them
