Thomas Morgan, aged 29 from Gorseinon, Swansea, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 19 years for the murder of his girlfriend’s five-month-old son, Jensen-Lee Dougal. The tragic incident occurred in March 2024, while the baby’s mother, Jordan Dougal, was at work. Experts described the injuries sustained by Jensen-Lee as the worst they had ever encountered, caused by a violent shaking. Jensen-Lee, described as a “happy baby,” suffered catastrophic trauma affecting his brain, spine, and eyes.
Morgan claimed throughout the trial and until his arrest in July 2025 that the injuries were accidental, resulting from his efforts to save Jensen-Lee from choking on his own sick. He said he had shaken the baby when Jensen-Lee’s body went limp. However, expert witnesses dismissed this explanation, stating that the severity of the injuries was inconsistent with an attempted rescue or rough play. Professor Stavros Stivaros, from Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, emphasized the brutal nature of the attack, noting that such violence would compel any bystander to intervene immediately. Jensen-Lee died on 31 March 2024 at University Hospital Wales in Cardiff after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Jordan Dougal gave a moving victim impact statement to the court, expressing the profound and ongoing grief she experiences. She described her son as one who loved being sung to and cuddled by his mother and family, and spoke of the painful milestones she would never witness, including hearing him say “I love you,” take his first steps, or start school. Dougal explained her heartbreaking decision to switch off Jensen-Lee’s life support, saying she did not want to remember him attached to machines when he had once been such a joyful child.
The court heard that Morgan, who was seen by the family as a stepfather after moving in with Jordan Dougal in January 2024, attended Jensen-Lee’s funeral and cremation in May 2024. Despite the extent of the infant’s injuries becoming clear to police, Morgan was not arrested for more than a year, until July 2025. Sentencing Morgan, Mrs Justice Stacey highlighted the betrayal inherent in the crime, noting that the baby had been placed in Morgan’s care.
