Doctor Foster: Surranne Jones drama to return for third and final series

Suranne Jones has expressed her excitement about returning to film the third and concluding series of the acclaimed BBC drama Doctor Foster. The network has announced that the show will be revived for five new episodes, nearly a decade after the second series aired. Jones will once again portray Gemma Foster, who continues her career as a GP and remains living in the same home, while preparing for a significant new chapter in her life—her upcoming wedding.

As the wedding day approaches, unresolved issues from Gemma’s past begin to resurface, threatening both her happiness and reputation. Jones shared her thoughts on coming back to the role, explaining that the timing felt right: “We needed space from the first two series, and we needed Tom—Gemma and Simon’s runaway son—to return as an adult with questions.” She elaborated that this series would focus on themes of accountability and the enduring impact of past traumas, emphasizing the complex relationship between Gemma and Simon that “has so much to unpick.”

Bertie Carvel and Tom Taylor are confirmed to reprise their roles as Simon and Tom, respectively. The story originally unfolded in the fictional town of Parminster, where Gemma discovered her husband’s infidelity. The first series aired in 2015, followed by a second in 2017 that drew nearly 10 million viewers for its finale. The show has been highly successful, earning multiple National Television Awards, with Jones winning a Bafta for Best Actress in 2016.

Production on the final series is scheduled to begin in Hertfordshire later this spring, with Mike Bartlett returning as the writer, creator, and executive producer. Bartlett commented, “I always hoped that we’d get to tell the final part of Gemma’s story, which is about a woman seeking justice in an unfair world.” He hinted at a dramatic conclusion involving “secrets, betrayals, vengeance and perhaps one last dinner party,” alluding to an iconic scene from the previous season. A broadcast date for the new series will be announced in the near future
