Norfolk pair found dead on Yr Wyddfa had 'hearts of gold'

Two young men from Dereham, Norfolk, were discovered deceased on Wales’s highest peak, Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), evoking heartfelt tributes from their former educators. The bodies of 20-year-old Eddie Hill and 19-year-old Jayden Long were located by a mountain rescue team on Thursday, following worries raised about their wellbeing the previous day.

Both Eddie and Jayden had completed their studies at Dereham Sixth Form College in 2024, where staff expressed deep sorrow and disbelief at the news. Kirsty Brook, head of year 13, reflected on their promising futures, stating, “The world really was their oyster. Anything they wanted, they could have gone on to achieve because they had the personality to do so – they had that get up and go.”

The pair lost their lives on a challenging stretch of terrain known as Crib y Ddysgl, a ridge reaching 1,065 meters in height, located less than a mile north of Yr Wyddfa’s summit and connected to the dangerously narrow Crib Goch ridge. Jurgen Dissmann, chairman of the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, described the rescue efforts as taking place overnight amid “full winter conditions,” highlighting the hazardous environment faced by volunteers. Inquests into the circumstances of their deaths are scheduled to begin on Friday.

Educators who knew Eddie and Jayden fondly remember their vivacious spirits and warmth. Psychology and sociology teacher Bethany Thomas remarked, “I think if you asked any teacher here, both of them had such character and charisma, very cheeky but just ultimately, hearts of gold.” She continued to emphasize the energy they brought to the classroom and their friendly nature, saying, “No-one had a bad word to say about them” and lamented their untapped potential. Kirsty Brook additionally noted their post-college ambitions, mentioning Eddie’s work at Slater Menswear and Jayden’s aim to start an apprenticeship, while expressing how deeply shaken she was by the tragedy
