Emergency services are currently responding to a major fire at The Promise School located in Okehampton, Devon. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue received reports of the flames and dense black smoke around 15:30 GMT and promptly dispatched approximately 15 fire engines alongside specialized equipment to tackle the blaze. Thankfully, there have been no injuries reported so far.
Local resident Glennon Walters, whose three-year-old son noticed the smoke from their home window, described the plume as “dark smoke,” which typically indicates an industrial fire. Initially, they assumed the smoke was coming from the nearby industrial estate but soon realized the new school building was involved after taking aerial photographs. By 17:45, the fire service confirmed the fire was producing a sizable smoke column, and the school had suffered severe damage, especially to its roof.
Devon and Cornwall Police have advised residents in the Stockley Hamlet vicinity to keep their windows and doors closed for safety and to avoid the area if possible. Sergeant Tom Ottley acknowledged the extensive damage, stating, “There is significant damage to the entire school.” He further emphasized that while firefighters have the situation under control, the focus now is on limiting and assessing the impact of the fire. At this stage, there appears to be no ongoing risk to nearby properties or casualties.
Authorities have been maintaining communication with the school, and plans to update parents about the situation and future arrangements will be shared overnight. Sgt Ottley also urged those who work near the fire site to stay informed and check for updates on Monday before heading to the area
