At this year’s Bafta awards ceremony held at London’s Southbank Centre, Robert Aramayo emerged as the standout star by claiming the best actor award. His compelling portrayal of John Davidson, a campaigner with Tourette’s syndrome, earned him this prestigious honor, surpassing well-known competitors including Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet. Overwhelmed with emotion, Aramayo expressed disbelief as he accepted the award, saying, “I honestly cannot believe this.” Earlier in the event, he also secured the Bafta rising star award, making history as the first performer to win both titles in the same year.
Jessie Buckley was recognized with the best actress award for her role as Agnes, Shakespeare’s mourning wife, in the film Hamnet. This accolade marked a milestone as she became the first Irish actress to win in this category. Acknowledging those who have inspired her, Buckley remarked, “This is nuts. This really does belong to the women past, present and future that taught me and continue to teach me how to do it differently.” The ceremony was graced by the presence of the Prince and Princess of Wales, with the Prince admitting he had not yet watched the emotionally intense film, while the Princess shared her own tearful experience after viewing it.
The darkly comedic thriller One Battle After Another dominated the event, securing six awards from fourteen nominations. The film, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, took home honors for best film, best director, and best supporting actor for Sean Penn, among others. Anderson responded to critics of modern cinema with a defiant statement: “Anybody that says movies aren’t any good any more can (expletive) right off. Let’s keep making movies without fear.” This victory represented Anderson’s first Bafta win in the directing category, adding to his previous award for best original screenplay.
Other notable achievements included the vampire horror film Sinners, which won three awards, notably best supporting actress for Wunmi Mosaku. Her performance as Annie in Ryan Coogler’s film has also earned her an Oscar nomination. The Norwegian family drama Sentimental Value won best film not in the English language, while Guillermo Del Toro’s adaptation of Frankenstein, featuring Jacob Elordi, swept the design categories including best production design, best hair and make-up, and best costume design.
