Australia backs removing Andrew from royal line of succession

Australia’s prime minister has conveyed his government’s backing for efforts to exclude Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from the line of royal succession. In a letter addressed to the UK prime minister, Anthony Albanese voiced his support for such measures. Despite losing his royal titles, including the distinction of “prince” in October 2025, Andrew still holds the eighth position in succession to the throne amid scrutiny over his connections with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The UK government is reportedly contemplating legislation that would formally remove Andrew from the succession order. This consideration comes in the wake of his arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office, an allegation he firmly denies. The legal process continues to unfold as authorities investigate the circumstances around these serious claims.

In his correspondence, Albanese wrote, “Dear Prime Minister Starmer, in light of recent events concerning Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, I am writing to confirm that my government would agree to any proposal to remove him from the line of royal succession.” He further emphasized the importance of justice being served, stating, “I agree with His Majesty that the law must now take its full course and there must be a full, fair and proper investigation. These are grave allegations and Australians take them seriously.”

Following Andrew’s arrest, King Charles commented on the situation, saying: “What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities.” The investigation is ongoing, and more information is expected to be revealed as the case progresses
