Residents of Killin in Perthshire are currently experiencing interruptions to their water supply due to a diesel leak into the River Dochart. This contamination has forced authorities to advise the community to avoid using tap water for anything beyond flushing toilets. Bottled water distribution continues for a second day as a precaution, ensuring residents have access to safe drinking water during this period.
Scottish Water has been actively responding to the incident, suspending operations at the local water treatment facility as a safety measure. Teams have been working continuously since the contamination was detected, with the company emphasizing that protecting public health remains their top priority. “Our priority is to protect public health by making sure no contaminated water enters the supply network,” stated John Griffin, the water operations general manager at Scottish Water. In addition to operational efforts, they are also providing tailored guidance to homes and businesses and mobilizing volunteers to assist with water deliveries.
Officials have made clear that boiling the water will not eliminate the diesel contamination, and residents must refrain from using tap water for drinking, cooking, washing, brushing teeth, feeding pets, or using appliances connected to the mains water. To flush the distribution system and reduce contamination risks, Scottish Water is adding water to the network and working closely with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and NHS partners to monitor the situation carefully. Griffin expressed gratitude for the community’s patience and cooperation and affirmed that restoring safe water supplies is their highest priority.
The source of the diesel spill has been linked to an attempted theft at the Gulf Lix Toll petrol station in Killin operated by Certas Energy. A spokesperson from Certas Energy confirmed that equipment associated with the attempted fuel theft was found on-site and acknowledged the company’s focus on managing the incident’s repercussions. Investigations are underway in collaboration with the police, SEPA, and other regulatory bodies, although it remains unclear exactly how the fuel entered the river or if the spill has been fully contained.
