Adam Lang, an amateur rugby player for Tondu RFC in Bridgend, found himself hospitalised after an unexpected fall into dog faeces during a match at Pandy Park. The 28-year-old was unaware that a cut on his elbow, sustained during the game against Crymych from Pembrokeshire, had become infected until he experienced severe pain later that evening. Despite initial treatment from the team’s physio at half-time, the infection intensified overnight, leading Lang to seek emergency medical care the next day.
Following his visit to A&E, Lang was prescribed antibiotics, but the infection worsened and spread to his hand. He was subsequently admitted to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital and placed on a rigorous course of intravenous antibiotics. Medical staff informed him that the infection was likely caused by contact with dog faeces on the pitch. Reflecting on the ordeal, Lang described the experience as mentally difficult but appreciated the support he received from his club, teammates, family, and colleagues during his hospital stay.
The incident has prompted calls for stricter controls on dog access to sports fields. Graham Thomas, chairman of Tondu RFC, expressed frustration over recurring problems with dog fouling at their home ground, Pandy Park. While he acknowledged that the majority of dog walkers act responsibly, Thomas emphasised the impact that a small number can have, leading him to advocate for a ban on dogs from marked sports pitches in Bridgend, mirroring actions taken by other councils in Wales. He highlighted that pitches are used frequently for training by both adults and children, questioning why dogs should be allowed to roam freely in these areas when there is ample space elsewhere in the park.
Bridgend council has confirmed it is reviewing the possibility of enforcing a ban on dogs from marked sports pitches across the county borough. The council urged the public to report any instances of dog fouling through their website. A spokesperson stressed the importance of dog owners cleaning up after their pets, warning that failing to do so could have serious consequences for other members of the community. The situation sheds light on a wider issue affecting local sports facilities and the health and safety of players like Adam Lang
