Sam Fender and Olivia Dean reach number one after 35 weeks with Rein Me In

Sam Fender and Olivia Dean have recently achieved a historic milestone on the UK singles chart with their collaborative track, “Rein Me In.” After spending an impressive 35 weeks within the top 40, the song has finally claimed the number one position, marking Fender’s first chart-topping single. This slow ascent has set a new record for the longest consecutive run in the top 40 before reaching number one, surpassing Ed Sheeran’s previous record held by “Thinking Out Loud,” which took 19 weeks to reach the top spot in 2014.

The track, a soulful pop-rock love song, has demonstrated remarkable staying power since its release in June. It had previously peaked at number five on three different occasions before its recent surge to the summit. Speaking about the unusual trajectory of the song, Fender shared with BBC Radio 1, “I guess it’s the internet, it travelled online and people come to it later, which is wonderful really because it’s the music that’s doing the talking.” The version that has now topped the charts is a duet rework of the original song from Fender’s Mercury Prize-winning album, “People Watching.” Fender credited Olivia Dean for adding a unique touch to the track, saying, “Olivia made the song her own, and it took on a life of its own after we did it together.”

The pair brought the song to life live for the first time at London Stadium, which holds special significance as the home ground of Olivia Dean’s football team, West Ham United. In a symbolic gesture, they performed the song together again a week later at St James’ Park, the stadium of Fender’s beloved Newcastle United. This back-to-back performance at each other’s home grounds highlighted a musical partnership that resonates deeply with their individual connections to these clubs.

Aside from their collaboration, both artists continue to enjoy chart success individually. Olivia Dean recently ruled the charts in October with her hit “Man I Need,” which remains in the top five, and also holds the number two spot this week with her single “So Easy (To Fall In Love).” Fender, meanwhile, had previously scored three number-one albums but had not yet landed a number-one single until “Rein Me In.” Other notable chart performers include Zara Larsson, whose song “Lush Life” has re-entered the top three nearly a decade after its initial release, and Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny, who currently sits in fifth place with his track “DtMF.
