Porthcawl man appears in court after body found in freezer

A 60-year-old man has been brought before the court following the discovery of an elderly woman’s body in a freezer. The incident came to light after South Wales Police responded to concerns regarding the welfare of an older woman at a residence in Poplar Crescent, Porthcawl, on Tuesday.

Upon entering the property, officers found the woman, in her 80s and not named during the court proceedings, deceased inside a large freezer. The situation prompted an investigation, leading to charges against Christopher Phillips, who is a local resident of Porthcawl.

Phillips appeared at Cardiff Magistrates Court on Friday, where he was formally charged with preventing a lawful and decent burial. Additionally, he faces allegations of fraud by false representation. During the brief court session, he only confirmed his personal details, including his full name, birth date, and address.

The defendant was held in custody following the hearing and is scheduled to face Cardiff Crown Court again on March 20 for further proceedings
