Liverpool recognised as one of the safest cities at night-time

Liverpool has once again demonstrated its standing as a vibrant and secure urban centre by obtaining the prestigious Purple Flag status for the sixteenth consecutive year. This accolade is awarded by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM), an international scheme that acknowledges cities providing a wide array of nightlife activities within a safe and inviting atmosphere.

The evaluation report from ATCM commended Liverpool’s initiatives such as City Watch, Taxi Marshals, and Licensing teams, all of which contribute significantly to the safety of the city’s nightlife. Additionally, Liverpool’s enhancement of its nighttime offerings was noted, including the revitalization of historic buildings like the recently opened Ivy and improvements in public transportation, highlighted by the introduction of a new train fleet and better accessibility through step-free access.

A key element of Liverpool’s success is the strong collaboration among various stakeholders, including Liverpool City Council, Liverpool BID, Liverpool ONE, Merseyside Police, Liverpool Nightlife CIC, and student organizations. Their combined efforts have ensured a well-maintained, clean, and secure night-time environment, reinforcing Liverpool’s position as one of the longest-standing Purple Flag cities globally, having held the status since the scheme was launched in 2010. The Purple Flag is now held by over 90 destinations across several countries, including the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Malta, New Zealand, and Australia.

Following this achievement, the Council is introducing a night-time safety charter aimed at further enhancing security for both customers and staff. Businesses in Liverpool are encouraged to adopt this charter, which comprises seven pledges focused on staff training, clear procedures for reporting unacceptable behavior, and raising awareness about available support services. To facilitate this, a launch event is scheduled, inviting local organizations to participate and engage in Liverpool’s ongoing commitment to a safe and dynamic nightlife.

Councillor Laura Robertson-Collins, Cabinet Member for Communities, Neighbourhoods and Streetscene, expressed pride in the city’s continual growth and its acclaimed night-time economy. She emphasized, “Liverpool is a city that continues to grow year on year, and we’re proud to be recognised for our fantastic nighttime economy for 16 years in a row.” She also noted the collective efforts of various partners and officers as essential to this success.

Jack Woodward, Neighbourhood Policing Inspector for Liverpool city centre, highlighted the importance of partnership work in maintaining a welcoming and secure environment. He stated, “Our work continues on a daily basis to build relationships with local businesses and provide a visible and proactive presence on the streets of the city.” He welcomed the extension of the Purple Flag status as recognition of these ongoing efforts.

From the business perspective, Shaun Holland, Director of Operations at Liverpool Business Improvement District, celebrated the city’s sustained Purple Flag status, attributing it to collaborative endeavors enhancing safety across the night-time economy. He remarked, “From the business perspective, it helps to keep those working in our night-time economy feeling safe and supported, alongside those who come to the city.” Holland also referenced initiatives such as the Business Crime Reduction Partnership and staff training improvements supported by Liverpool Nightlife CIC.

Donna Howitt, Deputy Centre Director at Liverpool ONE, underscored the significance of cross-sector collaboration in sustaining Liverpool’s night-time safety and vibrancy: “Retaining Purple Flag status since 2010 is a powerful endorsement of what can be achieved through genuine collaboration across the city.” She emphasized the critical role of a well-managed city centre in bolstering the visitor economy, supporting employment, and fostering growth in sectors like retail, leisure, culture, and hospitality. This recognition, she concluded, confirms Liverpool’s place as an inclusive and lively destination where both residents and visitors can enjoy the city safely at all times
