Lord of the Rings star Morfydd Clark cast in new Beatles biopic

Welsh actress Morfydd Clark, known for her role as Galadriel in Amazon Prime’s “The Rings of Power,” has been cast to portray Cynthia Lennon, the first wife of John Lennon, in Sir Sam Mendes’ ambitious Beatles biopic. This four-part film series will explore the lives and careers of the famous Liverpool band, presenting each installment from the perspective of one of the Beatles themselves. Clark, who hails from Penarth in the Vale of Glamorgan, joins a talented cast that includes Harris Dickinson as John Lennon.

The project also features Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison. Additional new cast members revealed include Harry Lawtey, who will portray Stuart Sutcliffe—the band’s original bassist before his departure in 1961—and Lucy Boynton, known for her role in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” who will play Paul McCartney’s fiancée Jane Asher. Lawtey previously played Welsh actor Richard Burton, while Farhan Akhtar takes on the role of renowned Indian composer Ravi Shankar.

John and Cynthia Lennon met at art college in Liverpool, marrying in 1962 and remaining together until their separation in 1968 following John’s affair with Yoko Ono. Their son, Julian Lennon, was born in 1963. Cynthia passed away from cancer in 2015. Morfydd Clark’s casting highlights her rising profile, noted particularly for sneakily incorporating a Welsh word into a scene during “The Rings of Power.”

Sir Sam Mendes has described the series as a unique storytelling approach, saying: “Each one is told from the particular perspective of just one of the guys. They intersect in different ways, sometimes overlapping, sometimes not. They’re four very different human beings. Perhaps this is a chance to understand them a little more deeply. But together, all four films will tell the story of the greatest band in history.” Alongside the main cast, other actors such as Saoirse Ronan, Anna Sawai, Aimee Lou Wood, and Mia McKenna-Bruce have been cast as the wives and partners of the Beatles. The entire series is slated to premiere simultaneously in April 2028
