The court proceedings for the individual accused of killing Chloe Mitchell are scheduled to begin on March 9. The trial will be held at Belfast Crown Court, where Brandon John Rainey, who previously lived on James Street in Ballymena, will face charges related to the case.
Chloe Mitchell, aged 21, disappeared from her residence in Ballymena in early June 2023, sparking extensive search efforts. Approximately eight days later, her remains were discovered. Following this, Rainey was apprehended and formally charged with her murder, as well as with an additional count of attempting to interfere with the lawful and respectful burial of a body.
Originally, the trial was planned to commence on February 23. However, the date was postponed to allow more time for resolving matters connected to witness availability and the disclosure of evidence. Despite ongoing barrister strike action impacting many cases, this particular trial was granted an exemption and will proceed as scheduled.
The strike in Northern Ireland, initiated by the Criminal Bar Association (CBA), aims to address dissatisfaction with legal aid fees provided to defence barristers. This industrial action has effectively put a hold on nearly all crown court cases involving defendants who rely on legal aid for their legal representation
