The vibrant spectacle of the Northern Lights—shimmering greens, reds, and purples—has increasingly become a cherished experience for many across the UK. Once considered a rare sight, these auroras have grown more frequent in recent years, drawing enthusiasts eager to witness their ethereal beauty. Gary Macleod, an amateur photographer who first saw the lights as a child, describes the experience as addictive. “Once you get your first decent sighting it becomes an addiction,” he says, reflecting on a fascination that has lasted over three decades.

Living in Tongue, in the Scottish Highlands, Macleod has spent more than 30 years capturing the aurora’s dance across the northern skies. Despite all that time, he admits the sight never grows old. “Sometimes I switch off the camera and just watch, because there is no better memory card than your own memory,”
