University College London (UCL) has announced that it has reached a settlement with a group of students and graduates who took legal action concerning the quality of teaching provided during the Covid-19 pandemic and strike periods. Although the university did not admit any liability, it emphasized the efforts made to maintain educational standards and support for students amidst these challenging times.
Representing the students involved, a lawyer expressed satisfaction with the outcome and highlighted ongoing efforts to advocate for tens of thousands of students from other institutions affected during the pandemic. The specific terms of the settlement remain confidential and have not been disclosed publicly. Those who participated in the legal action initially joined the claim through an online platform called Student Group Claim.
The legal teams for the claimants contended that the move to online teaching and cancellation of some scheduled sessions had negatively impacted access to university facilities and diminished the overall quality of education. In response, UCL maintained that the wellbeing and academic success of students were prioritized throughout the crisis. David Hamon, the lead claimant, confirmed that the dispute was resolved on confidential terms without any admission of fault by either side and expressed relief that a trial would no longer be necessary.
Senior legal representatives involved in the case expressed their satisfaction with the settlement and noted that while this particular claim against UCL has concluded, efforts will continue to support similar claims involving students from other universities during Covid. Meanwhile, UCL’s president and provost, Michael Spence, acknowledged the difficulties faced by students during the pandemic and praised the university’s prompt and careful response, which adhered to government guidance while striving to uphold academic standards. He also remarked that resolving the dispute would allow UCL to focus on its primary goals of advancing research and education
