Two men involved in a plot targeting Manchester’s Jewish community have been sentenced to life imprisonment in what authorities described as potentially “the UK’s most deadly terror attack.” Walid Saadaoui, aged 38, and Amar Hussein, 52, orchestrated the smuggling of firearms into the United Kingdom as part of an extremist plan inspired by ISIS, according to evidence presented at Preston Crown Court.
The attempted attack was thwarted through the efforts of an undercover officer who played a pivotal role in disrupting their scheme, according to Greater Manchester Police. Saadaoui received a minimum prison term of 37 years, while Hussein was sentenced to at least 26 years. Saadaoui, from Abram in Wigan and originally from Tunisia, had intended to import a cache of weapons including four AK-47 assault rifles, two pistols, and 900 rounds of ammunition.
Authorities intervened in May 2024, involving over 200 officers during the arrest of Saadaoui in a hotel car park in Bolton, where he went to retrieve firearms that had been deactivated. Prior to this, Saadaoui had drawn attention by using multiple Facebook accounts—none bearing his real name—to disseminate extremist Islamic content. The investigation revealed he had paid a deposit for the guns and believed he was coordinating their importation with an extremist contact named Farouk, who was in fact an undercover agent.
Following Saadaoui’s arrest, Amar Hussein and Walid’s younger brother, Bilel Saadaoui, 36, were also detained. The court learned that Saadaoui had been prepared to martyr himself during the attack, having made a will and left cash to support his family. Both Saadaoui and Hussein, who has no fixed address, were convicted of preparing terrorist acts dated between December 2023 and May 2024.
