A heartbreaking case unfolded in Manchester where a young child tragically lost her life due to severe abuse. Two-year-old Omra Wali Jan suffered a fatal brain injury after being shaken by her mother. Omra was discovered unconscious in her home in Levenshulme in November 2023, bearing visible signs of physical abuse, including burns, bruises, and a fractured rib.
Following a court hearing, Morsal Mohammed Naim, aged 32, received a nine-year prison sentence after admitting to manslaughter and child cruelty charges. Omra’s father, Firooz Wali Jan, also 32, had earlier pleaded guilty to child cruelty and was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison. The case revealed shocking neglect and violence, with both parents failing in their responsibility to protect their daughter.
When emergency services arrived at the home on 30 November 2023, Naim had initially told paramedics that Omra had choked on a biscuit in the living room. However, medical examinations revealed unexplained injuries, and scans uncovered a fractured rib alongside a traumatic brain injury. Doctors concluded that the toddler had likely been shaken violently, with additional trauma possibly caused by contact with a hard surface. Police confirmed Naim was the only adult present when the critical injury occurred, and Omra later died in February 2024 after spending over two months in hospital.
Omra’s father faced arrest in April 2024 connected to the burn injuries and bruising she sustained. Despite his denials and providing implausible explanations for the harm, he was subsequently charged with child cruelty. Detective Philip Reade described the investigation as “challenging” and “horrifying,” emphasizing the sorrow felt by everyone involved. He reflected on the immense suffering Omra endured and condemned her parents for neglecting their moral duty to nurture and protect her. Crown Prosecution Service representative Alan Richardson highlighted the cruelty of the act, stating, “Morsal Mohammed Naim not only shook her daughter to death, but then lied about what she had done. As her mother, Naim should have cared for two-year old Omra Wali Jan, and kept her safe. Instead, she inflicted the catastrophic injuries that caused Omra’s death.”
