XL bully owner jailed over Staffordshire dog attack death

A man has been sentenced to five years in prison after his two XL bull terriers attacked and killed a person in Staffordshire. James Harrison Trimble-Pettit, aged 33, admitted to having dogs dangerously out of control following the fatal incident involving Ian Price, 52, which took place outside a property in Stonnall on 14 September 2023.

Mr. Price sustained numerous dog bite injuries during the attack and was rushed to hospital, where he subsequently passed away. In response to the incident, both dogs involved were euthanized. At Stafford Crown Court, the emotional impact of the tragedy was evident as the victim’s wife, Hannah Price, described how the loss of her husband had devastated her.

Speaking at the sentencing hearing, Mrs. Price shared, “I’m haunted by dreams of those dogs, what Ian endured and the kids’ faces when I had to tell them.” The court learned that Mr. Price had encountered one of the dogs outside Trimble-Pettit’s residence after it escaped, and as he attempted to return the animal, the attack occurred shortly after 3 p.m. BST.

Judge John Edwards commented on the severity of the incident, stating that the victim was “utterly overpowered by these young, powerful creatures who ravaged him for 12 minutes.” Mrs. Price also reflected on the profound effect her husband’s death had on her, saying it made her “question everything” and tore apart every hope she had for the future. She added, “I always thought Ian was indestructible. He was the toughest man I ever met… as well as being strong, he was kind and dependable.
