Wife blows kiss to murder accused before giving evidence

The wife of David Campbell, a former gamekeeper standing trial for murder, has testified that she was unaware of any conflicts between her husband and the victim. Betty Campbell, who showed affection by blowing a kiss to her husband upon entering the witness box, stated she did not recall any disputes between David Campbell and Brian Low, despite once telling police there had been “one or two” issues between the two men while working together.

David Campbell is accused of fatally shooting Brian Low, 65, on a footpath in Leafy Lane, Aberfeldy, on 16 February 2024. Campbell, aged 77, denies the murder charge and has presented a special defence of alibi, maintaining he was at home in Aberfeldy when the incident took place. During the seventh day of the trial at the High Court in Glasgow, Betty Campbell, who has been married to David Campbell for 57 years and also knew Low through their work on the Edradynate Estate, provided her testimony.

According to Betty, her interactions with Brian Low were limited as their roles on the estate did not overlap much. She explained that the two men mainly worked separately, although David occasionally required Low’s help with operating a tractor. When asked whether there were any grievances between her husband and Low, she responded, “No, as far as I know,” even though a police statement she had made in late February 2024 referenced some unresolved issues that she could neither remember nor wished to comment on.

Further questioning covered Betty Campbell’s familiarity with the area where Brian Low’s body was found. She recalled running there with colleagues during their time working at a swimming pool and riding her electric bicycle there several times in late 2023 and early 2024 to build her cycling skills. Prosecutor Greg Farrell brought up the issue of soil sample analysis linking the bike to the scene, to which she affirmed truthfully under oath that she had been there on her bike. When pressed about inconsistencies between her court testimony and police statements, she attributed her earlier remarks to feeling “under pressure” during police interviews. The trial, presided over by Lord Scott, continues as Campbell denies all charges
