A woman has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her partner over 15 years ago. Anna Podedworna killed Izabela Zablocka, then dismembered her body into two parts and buried the remains in the garden of a house in Derby. The case concluded with Podedworna receiving a life sentence with a minimum term of 21 years at Derby Crown Court.
The breakthrough in this longstanding case came when Podedworna herself alerted Derbyshire Police in 2025, indicating that Izabela’s body was buried in Princes Street, Derby. This led to a thorough police search that uncovered Izabela’s remains almost 15 years after she had gone missing. The court was told that Izabela had last contacted her mother in Poland on 28 August 2010 before disappearing without any further communication.
During sentencing, Mrs Justice Williams KC emphasized the close relationships Izabela maintained with her family, highlighting the lasting pain caused by her disappearance. She said, “Izabela was a loved family member, who enjoyed a close bond with her mother, grandmother and her daughter Kasia.” The judge also criticized Podedworna’s lack of remorse, stating, “You have shown no remorse. You do not deserve credit for belatedly contacting the police in May 2025 – you only did this to put forward a false account of Izabela’s death.”
Prosecutor Gordon Aspden KC revealed that after Izabela’s final phone call, she was murdered by Podedworna, who used a large knife to cut her body in two. The defendant’s background as a skilled butcher, experienced in deboning and portioning meat, was cited during the trial. Furthermore, after burying the remains in the garden, concrete hardstanding was placed over the site to conceal the crime. The discovery followed persistent efforts by Izabela’s family and a confrontation by a relative, which ultimately compelled Podedworna to disclose the grave’s location to police
