John Doyle, a former inspector with the Metropolitan Police, has been charged with multiple serious offences, including five counts of rape. According to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), these charges stem from incidents that allegedly involved violent bondage sex, during which Doyle is accused of wrapping a woman’s face in clingfilm. This form of abuse is stated to be part of a pattern of controlling and coercive behaviour.
Doyle, aged 53 and formerly part of the Met’s Specialist Firearms Command, was officially charged on 4 February. The allegations cover a range of offences such as actual bodily harm, grievous bodily harm with intent, and coercive and controlling behaviour, all reportedly occurring between 2012 and 2024 and involving a single victim. In addition to the rape charges, he faces multiple other accusations, including assault by penetration, misconduct in public office, and possession of extreme pornography.
The former officer, who hails from Liverpool, was arrested on 24 June 2024 and suspended from duty immediately. A private disciplinary hearing took place, after which he was dismissed from the police force on 10 December 2024. Part of the misconduct allegations includes two claims of improper sexual activity on police premises, one involving Doyle allegedly gaining access to a firearm.
Catherine Baccas, deputy chief crown prosecutor of CPS London South, commented on the case, stating: “The Crown Prosecution Service has decided to charge John Doyle with controlling or coercive behaviour, several counts of rape, assault by penetration and misconduct in public office. This follows allegations made by a woman relating to a period of alleged abuse spanning 12 years. Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring this case to court and that it is in the public interest to do so.” Doyle is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday
