Albert Bridge, located in west London, has been closed to vehicular traffic as a cautious response following a recent inspection. This closure affects the historic crossing that links Battersea with Chelsea, a structure that has stood for 150 years. Kensington and Chelsea Council reported that the concerns emerged during routine maintenance work carried out on the bridge.
The council explained that engineers are currently reviewing the results of this planned inspection. To ensure safety while determining the necessary steps forward, the bridge remains shut to vehicles. However, pedestrians are still allowed to cross, and road traffic is being rerouted via Chelsea Bridge and Battersea Bridge to accommodate the closure.
Johnny Thalassites, the council’s lead member for environment and planning, emphasized the need for ongoing vigilance with the bridge’s upkeep. He stated, “The safety of the bridge’s users is our absolute priority, so we have taken the precautionary step of closing the bridge to vehicles to allow our expert teams to carry out further investigations.” He also noted that progress on addressing the issues was advancing quickly.
Local businesses have felt the impact of the closure. Maria, who owns a florist near King’s Road, described how delivery schedules have been delayed because drivers must take alternative routes, causing some to exceed their working hours. She pointed out that since the closure began on Monday afternoon, several businesses in the area have been affected. Albert Bridge itself is a Grade II listed structure, notable for being one of only two bridges in London, alongside Tower Bridge, that have not been replaced since their construction, dating back to 1873
