A 71-year-old man named Robert Green was convicted of stalking BBC Scotland presenter Anne McAlpine over a period of approximately four years. Green’s stalking began with sending her multiple letters containing declarations of love, poetry, and gifts such as CDs and jewellery, which made Anne uncomfortable but initially went unreported. His behavior escalated over time, including attempts to contact her through BBC reception and eventually turning up at her home in 2024.
Green was found guilty of a course of conduct causing alarm and fear to Anne between February 2021 and November 2024. He denied the charges, but Sheriff Owen Mullan sentenced him to two years’ supervision and issued a lifetime non-harassment order barring him from contacting Anne. The sheriff described Green’s actions as “sinister, unwelcomed and upsetting,” and the sentence was given as an alternative to prison.
Anne McAlpine, 39, who is a newsreader and journalist presenting BBC Scotland News and the countryside program Landward, shared how the stalking affected her, describing the experience as “intrusive and intimidating” and recounting how the letters began arriving at BBC Scotland’s headquarters in 2021. The letters implied an imaginary relationship, with Green fixating on her appearances, clothing, and gestures. After Anne became engaged to cameraman Ken McAlpine in October 2021, the tone of the letters changed, and Green initially promised to stop, but his behavior eventually escalated to the point of physically approaching her home.
