Man appears in court charged with murder of De Montfort student

An 18-year-old man has been formally charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of a student near a university campus. Khaleed Oladipo, a 20-year-old second-year student at De Montfort University (DMU), succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Tuesday evening after being attacked on Oxford Street in Leicester.

The individual accused, Harper Dennis, who lives in Bath Lane, Leicester, faces charges of murder along with possession of an offensive weapon in a public area. He made his first court appearance at Leicester Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, with a subsequent hearing scheduled at Leicester Crown Court on Tuesday. Additionally, Dennis is charged with two counts of possessing offensive weapons in a private setting; however, police confirmed these are unrelated to the murder inquiry.

Oladipo’s family, based in London, paid tribute describing him as “a good boy who loved his family.” They expressed their grief and gratitude towards the bystanders who tried to assist Khaleed following the incident. The family noted, “We cannot begin to put into words how sad we are to have lost Khaleed. He was an extremely loved son, brother, uncle, boyfriend and friend.”

Leicestershire Police reported they were called to Oxford Street near Bonners Lane shortly after 5 pm on Tuesday. In response to the stabbing, several streets in the vicinity were closed temporarily. In reaction to the tragedy, DMU’s vice-chancellor, Prof Katie Normington, stated she was “devastated” by the loss and assured that support is being provided to students, staff, and Khaleed’s family during this difficult time
