Stathern summer camp leader jailed for drugging and abusing boys

Jon Ruben, a former veterinarian, teacher, and summer camp leader, has been sentenced to over 23 years in prison after it was revealed that he drugged boys with tranquilliser-laced sweets before sexually abusing them. The 76-year-old exploited his position in the community and masked his actions behind a facade of Christianity, according to Leicester Crown Court. Furthermore, Ruben drugged his wife, Susan, ensuring she remained unconscious during the times the assaults occurred. Susan, who had been married to Ruben for 24 years, publicly condemned him in court, describing him as a “sadistic, monstrous paedophile” and confirmed that she had initiated divorce proceedings.

The court proceedings saw emotional responses from the families of the victims, with some parents visibly upset and others openly expressing anger towards Ruben during sentencing. After the hearing, these parents collectively described him as a “devious child sexual predator,” emphasizing how he had gained their trust by projecting himself as a devout Christian. They shared the emotional toll the crimes have had on their families, expressing feelings of shock, anxiety, and guilt, but firmly placing the blame on Ruben himself.

The investigation began after eight children and one adult became ill at Stathern Lodge, a holiday camp run by Ruben in Leicestershire. Prosecutors described how Ruben had orchestrated what he called a “sweet game,” in which boys were urged to consume drugged sweets rapidly before bedtime, allowing him to carry out his abuse undetected. The court heard that Ruben utilized his veterinary knowledge to refine the sedatives he administered and accessed drugs via the dark web. The judge highlighted Ruben’s hypocrisy, noting his position as the camp’s safeguarding lead, which he exploited to gain close access to children.
