Benjamin Wegg-Prosser, who served as the chief executive of the lobbying firm Global Counsel, has resigned following revelations in the Jeffrey Epstein files that suggested connections between the company and the convicted sex offender. Wegg-Prosser co-founded Global Counsel alongside Lord Peter Mandelson after the Labour Party’s defeat in the 2010 general election. The firm has provided advisory services to high-profile clients such as Shell and TikTok.
Reports indicate that Wegg-Prosser made the decision to step down after recognizing that his and Mandelson’s involvement, as mentioned in the Epstein files, was causing reputational damage to the business. Despite stepping away from his role, Wegg-Prosser has maintained that he has acted appropriately and denies any wrongdoing. His professional profile has since been removed from the Global Counsel website.
Lord Mandelson had earlier resigned from the board of Global Counsel in 2024, shortly before a general election. The firm itself employs over 100 staff members and operates offices across several major cities, including Berlin, Brussels, Singapore, Washington DC, and Doha. In the previous fiscal year, Global Counsel reported revenues of £21.6 million and a profit of £250,000.
Wegg-Prosser has long been associated with Lord Mandelson, dating back to the 1990s when he worked as one of Mandelson’s key advisers during his political career. In 2005, Wegg-Prosser was appointed as director of Downing Street’s strategic communications unit under then-Prime Minister Tony Blair. Meanwhile, Lord Mandelson was dismissed from his position as the UK ambassador to the US last year after earlier reports surfaced regarding his connections with Epstein.
