June Bunyan, originally from a Scottish island, moved to California in 2023 to chase her ambition of becoming a defence attorney. During her time in Los Angeles, she connected with Jonathan Renteria, 25, through their shared interest in martial arts, and the couple eventually got married. In July 2025, they welcomed their daughter, Regina, a moment that brought immense joy to June’s life.
June’s mother, Jill Bunyan, who still resides on Arran, maintained regular contact with her daughter and described June as happy and “ecstatic” about becoming a mother. Tragically, less than two months after Regina’s birth, June, aged 37, was found murdered in her Los Angeles apartment. Her body was dismembered, and Jonathan Renteria was charged with her murder. Jill recalls her daughter as “bright as a button and easy to love” and expressed deep distress over the length of the court proceedings, which she fears may take up to two years.
The pain for Jill is compounded by the fact that she has had no contact with her granddaughter Regina since June’s death and is devastated by the disappearance of her daughter’s belongings. Jill is currently engaged in costly legal struggles in the U.S. to gain custody of Regina and to address the issue of the missing possessions. The family has initiated a crowdfund to help cover these legal expenses. Jill hopes that Regina might eventually come to live with her in Scotland but believes the child is presently in the care of Renteria’s parents, although this has not been independently verified.
June had established a paralegal service shortly after moving to LA and aspired to pass the California bar exam to practise law fully. Before her death, June had filed a restraining order against Renteria, alleging domestic violence, though this was later withdrawn. Her body, discovered on 11 September 2025, bore severe injuries with traumatic neck wounds and multiple sharp force injuries; one arm has never been recovered. Authorities learned about the case when officers found Renteria injured in a hotel room alongside a note confessing to June’s killing. Jill remains desperate for full transparency about the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s murder and is troubled that June was initially unidentified in the absence of proper documents. Three months after June’s death, police reportedly recovered her passport and other papers from Renteria’s parents, but the details surrounding this remain unclear. The refusal of Renteria’s family to engage with the media adds to the uncertainty.
