A man who gave children sweets laced with a tranquilliser at a summer camp and subsequently sexually assaulted them has confessed to drugging his wife to ensure she remained asleep during the abuse. This admission took place at Leicester Crown Court on Wednesday.
During court proceedings, Jon Ruben pleaded guilty to unlawfully and maliciously administering the drug temazepam with the intent to cause harm, aggravation, or annoyance. Ruben gave a voluntary statement confirming the offence, which was said to have occurred between July 26 and 29, targeting his wife, Susan. While entering the plea, Ruben was visibly emotional and expressed remorse, saying, “I’m so sorry.” Judge Timothy Spencer KC noted Ruben’s unusual emotional state and warned that the sentencing scheduled for Friday would be an even more difficult day.
Ruben had been running a children’s summer camp for nearly three decades. Prosecutors outlined how he had engaged the boys in a game that involved quickly eating sweets just before bedtime. This game had been a recurring activity for many years, and on some occasions, children became ill the next morning. Mary Prior KC, the prosecuting counsel, reported some children exhibited severe symptoms such as slurred speech, difficulty walking, and an inability to wake up.
Seventeen charges were admitted by Ruben, encompassing serious offences such as child sexual assault and assault by penetration, along with cruelty relating to eight victims. Additional charges included possession of controlled substances like temazepam, flubromazolam, and diazepam, fraudulent acquisition of drugs, and the creation of indecent images of children. Investigations revealed that Ruben’s electronic devices contained over 50 Category A indecent videos of children, along with further Category B and C material made between August 2023 and June of the previous year, although these did not involve children from the summer camp. Ruben was remanded to HMP Leicester pending his sentencing, with the judge acknowledging the gravity of the forthcoming decision and its impact on the defendant’s life
