Police have made additional arrests in connection with the tragic death of a nine-month-old boy who was fatally attacked by a dog in south-east Wales. The investigation into the incident, which occurred in the village of Rogiet, continues to develop as authorities seek justice.
Gwent Police revealed that on Tuesday, a man in his 30s and a woman in her 60s from Chepstow were taken into custody on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. Earlier, on 7 November, a man in his 30s and a woman in her 20s were arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control. The dog involved was identified as a six-year-old XL Bully, which had been registered and had a certificate of exemption issued in 2024 prior to the introduction of a ban on the breed.
Residents of the small community described the attack as “heart-breaking.” The incident took place on Crossway, a street in Rogiet, where flowers were later placed in memory of the infant. The possession of XL Bully dogs without an exemption certificate has been illegal since 1 February 2024, yet data shows a rise in dog attacks during that year. Freedom of Information data from police forces in England and Wales reported 31,920 dog attacks in 2024, marking a 2% increase from the previous year. However, these figures may not be comprehensive, as three police forces were unable to provide usable data.
Assistant Chief Constable Vicki Townsend acknowledged the community’s concern surrounding the case, advising the public to refrain from speculation. “Speculation, particularly online commentary, can impact the investigation,” she said, extending condolences on behalf of the police to everyone affected by the tragic death. Authorities remain focused on ensuring a thorough and impartial investigation into the heartbreaking incident
