An 18-year-old male has been detained on suspicion of murder following the fatal stabbing of a student near a university campus. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when emergency services were alerted to a man who had collapsed on Oxford Street, near the junction with Bonners Lane, shortly after 17:00 GMT.
The victim, a man in his twenties, was promptly taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary but tragically passed away soon after arrival, according to Leicestershire Police. Prof Katie Normington, vice-chancellor of De Montfort University (DMU), expressed profound sorrow over the loss, stating she was “devastated by the tragic death of one of our students.” She emphasized that the university community is grieving and that support is being offered directly to students, staff, and the victim’s family. Prof Normington further commented, “We are working with Leicestershire Police as they investigate this tragic incident.”
Authorities believe the stabbing followed a confrontation on the street between the victim and another man, who fled the scene. Police are conducting thorough inquiries and have urged anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage related to the event to come forward. Several roads surrounding the area, including Infirmary Road, Oxford Street, and others, were temporarily closed while investigations were underway.
Eyewitness Tye Crofton, a 19-year-old software engineer, described the moments following the stabbing. Crofton recalled hearing a scream shortly before finishing work and noticing a group of people gathered around a man lying on the ground, covered by coats. “I didn’t really know to react initially,” Crofton admitted, observing that someone was administering CPR while another person appeared to be on the phone with emergency services. Detective Inspector Lorna Granville, the senior investigating officer, said the police are reviewing CCTV footage and speaking with potential witnesses as they piece together the events.
