Liverpool City Council is celebrating a significant milestone as Knowledge Quarter Liverpool (KQ Liverpool) marks its tenth anniversary. Since its inception in 2016, this partnership has been instrumental in fostering innovation, developing skills, attracting investment, and promoting inclusive growth throughout the city.
KQ Liverpool was established through collaboration between key institutions such as the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, and the NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group. The initiative was designed to leverage the city’s strong knowledge economy and build a world-class innovation district centrally located in Liverpool.
Over the last ten years, KQ Liverpool has emerged as one of the UK’s leading innovation districts. It now hosts more than 400 businesses and employs over 15,000 people, while also attracting upwards of 60,000 students annually. This impressive growth has helped position Liverpool as a frontrunner in innovation across Europe, culminating in the city securing third place in the 2026 European Capital of Innovation Awards. Additionally, KQ Liverpool has gained recognition for its focus on inclusive innovation, particularly through its KQ Futures programme, which annually engages hundreds of young people in primary, secondary, and sixth form education through skill-building and inspirational activities.
To honor its tenth year, KQ Liverpool is launching a “Ten for Ten” series featuring a variety of events and initiatives. Highlights include a fundraising challenge led by CEO Colin Sinclair supporting several charities, the creation of a time capsule to be opened in 2040 containing stories of current innovation and future hopes, an art competition inspired by the theme *Life Under the Microscope* aimed at schoolchildren, and a community festival celebrating the vital role of local residential neighborhoods in shaping the district. Moreover, the anniversary celebrations will see KQ Liverpool deepen its international connections through the iCapital alumni network and introduce a refreshed brand image along with a special-edition logo.
Reflecting on the decade of achievements, Cllr Liam Robinson, Leader of Liverpool City Council and Cabinet Member for Innovation at the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, stated: “KQ Liverpool has made a significant contribution to our city over the last decade. Its work has helped attract investment, create jobs and build skills across the Liverpool City Region. We look forward to continuing our partnership as we work towards our shared ambition of a fairer, greener and more innovative future for all our communities.”
