Charlotte Cadden, a retired police detective with three decades of experience in both Greater Manchester Police and the Metropolitan Police, has been selected as the Conservative Party’s candidate for the upcoming by-election in the Gorton and Denton constituency. This election, scheduled for 26 February, comes after the resignation of former Labour MP Andrew Gwynne due to health reasons.
During her career, Cadden took an active role in addressing workplace inequality by establishing and leading the police sex equality and equity network, focusing on combating sex-based discrimination. In addition to her policing background, she serves as a trustee for Sex Matters, a charity that supports gender-critical views and advocates for maintaining single-sex spaces. Her political activity includes involvement in local Conservative circles in Bolton.
Cadden emphasized key local issues such as schools, the NHS, and policing, expressing concern over what she described as the infiltration of social justice theories into public services, which she believes has compromised the safety of women and girls. She called for “a proper inquiry on grooming gangs” operating in the region and advocated for the removal of the carbon tax. She also outlined policies aimed at banning mobile phones in schools and tackling environmental taxation.
Kevin Hollinrake, chairman of the Conservative Party, praised Cadden’s campaigning efforts on topics including grooming gangs and the protection of single-sex spaces. He highlighted her commitment to “push for the truth, and make sure lessons are learned,” calling it the kind of “straight-talking leadership we need.” In the 2024 General Election, the Conservatives placed fifth in the constituency with 2,888 votes, while Gwynne retained the seat for Labour with a strong majority of 18,555 votes.
