Seventeen-year-old John Fadare has made a remarkable transition from singing in his school choir to becoming a member of a boy band produced by music executive Simon Cowell. The Rochester, Kent student was chosen to join the newly formed group, December 10, following a highly competitive audition process that was showcased in a Netflix documentary series.
December 10 consists of seven teenage members, who launched their first single, “Run My Way,” on Friday. Reflecting on his sudden rise to fame, Fadare said, “At school it’s weird as people don’t know how to act around me.” He shared that singing has been a part of his life for a long time, starting with five years in his school choir and a habit of singing to himself even as a child. “As I got older I wanted to sing pop music, that was more fun,” he explained.
Thousands of young hopefuls auditioned for Simon Cowell’s latest boy band project, and Fadare revealed that he nearly didn’t try out. “I actually wasn’t going to audition, if not for my dad convincing me to go on the day,” he said. “I was a bit hesitant but he was like ‘you never know. Give it a shot.’ If not for that support I don’t think I’d be here.” For the final round of auditions, Fadare traveled to Miami along with 15 others. He recalled the encouragement he received from viewers of the show: “When people watch the show they tell me ‘your parents were amazing’. And I’m like ‘what about me?’.”
Simon Cowell reflected on his initial impression of Fadare during the Netflix series The Next Act, recounting, “He looked me in the eye and he said ‘I completely understand where you’re coming from.’ And I just thought, in that moment, people are going to like him.” Despite the demanding start to his music career, Fadare intends to continue his education. He is staying in school to complete his A-levels, studying music, drama, and English. “One day I’m at school doing my work and the next day I’m on a plane going to New York or LA,” he said. “It’s madness but I’m just happy to be able to have those two different sides.
