Four individuals have been convicted of murdering Joanne Penney, an innocent woman who became an unintended victim amid a violent dispute between rival drug gangs operating in south Wales. The fatal incident occurred last March in Talbot Green when Joanne answered the door of a flat she was visiting, only to be fatally shot at close range. Marcus Huntley, who admitted to firing the fatal shot early in the trial at Cardiff Crown Court, was joined by Jordan Mills-Smith from Cardiff, and Leicester-based Joshua Gordon, Melissa Quailey-Dashper, and Kristina Ginova, all of whom were found guilty of murder by the jury.
The conflict that led to Joanne’s death was rooted in a drug-related rivalry between gangs based in Cardiff and Leicester. Huntley, a 21-year-old drug dealer from Cardiff, procured his supply from Leicester and distributed crack cocaine in south Wales. Tensions escalated when Huntley placed a dealer at 10 Llys Illtyd in Talbot Green, a location previously used by a rival group known as the “Jimmy gang.” This group repeatedly confronted members of Huntley’s gang, humiliating them on two occasions and provoking the decision to arm themselves in retaliation. Huntley acquired a modified starter pistol and, together with four accomplices, traveled to Talbot Green on 9 March to carry out their plan.
On arrival, Huntley approached the flat with Mills-Smith and Quailey-Dashper. The latter later claimed she had been given crack cocaine to knock on the door before fleeing the scene. Joanne Penney, temporarily staying at the address, answered the door and was shot in the heart. Paramedics performed emergency open heart surgery on the spot, but unfortunately, Joanne was pronounced dead due to the gunshot wound. After the shooting, the defendants returned to Cardiff, where Huntley tried to dispose of the weapon and ammunition by burying them near a park close to homes and a primary school. He later attempted to evade arrest by shaving his head and traveling to Leicester but was apprehended on 12 March
