Jeffrey Epstein invited 'The Duke' to meet Russian woman

Newly disclosed emails indicate that the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein invited an individual believed to be Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former prince, to meet for dinner with a 26-year-old Russian woman. These emails, recently released by the US Department of Justice as part of ongoing investigations into Epstein’s activities, include messages signed simply with the initial “A” and a signature resembling “HRH Duke of York KG.”

The correspondence dates back to August 2010, notably two years after Epstein had already pleaded guilty to soliciting a minor. This revelation is expected to intensify the scrutiny on Mountbatten-Windsor, who has been under public and legal examination for years due to his association with Epstein. Mountbatten-Windsor has been approached for comment by BBC News but has consistently denied any improper conduct.

Within the emails exchanged over two days in August 2010, Epstein, using an account presumably named “The Duke,” sought to facilitate a meeting between Mountbatten-Windsor and a young Russian woman whom Epstein described as “clever, beautiful, trustworthy” and who would be in London at the time. The recipient of the email responded that he would be in Geneva until August 22nd but expressed willingness to meet the woman, requesting Epstein to provide contact details and any additional relevant information about her.

Epstein’s criminal record included a conviction in 2008 for soliciting sex from a 14-year-old girl in Florida, and he finished serving his sentence in July 2010, shortly before these emails were sent. The BBC has not independently verified the authenticity of the emails. Mountbatten-Windsor has faced allegations, which he denies, of sexually assaulting Virginia Giuffre when she was a teenager trafficked by Epstein. In 2022, he made a financial settlement with Giuffre, who he states he has never met, to resolve a civil sexual assault claim. He has repeatedly maintained his innocence and asserted that he did not observe or suspect any of the criminal behavior that later resulted in Epstein’s conviction
