Man guilty of murdering man who punched his younger brother

A man has been found guilty of killing another man in a daytime incident that appeared to be motivated by retaliation. The 37-year-old, Kevin Shanley, targeted Brian Gough after Gough had punched Kevin’s younger brother, Kyle Shanley, who is 28 years old, just moments prior to the fatal attack.

Kevin Shanley now faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison after the High Court in Glasgow delivered a murder conviction. The court heard that the fatal confrontation began when the two Shanley brothers were spotted on Saracen Street, where they encountered Brian Gough and his girlfriend. Initially, there was no indication of hostility between the groups, but the situation quickly escalated when Gough suddenly punched Kyle Shanley, catching him by surprise.

During the trial, jurors were shown CCTV footage that captured key moments of the incident. Following the initial altercation, the brothers left a nearby block of flats and started looking for Gough. It was revealed that Kyle Shanley made a threat with a knife towards Gough after he exited a shop, only for Gough to push him away. When Gough returned to the shop’s doorway, Kevin Shanley had taken the knife and stabbed him before fleeing the scene. Gough was later seen slumped at the counter and then collapsing with a bloodied T-shirt. He was struck in the heart and died in hospital the following day.

Prosecutor Colin Edward explained that Kevin Shanley was the one who stabbed Gough, but emphasized that Kyle Shanley was also involved by participating in a plan to use serious violence that day. Despite this, Kyle Shanley was acquitted of murder and instead convicted of the lesser charge of assault with a knife. Kevin Shanley’s sentencing has been postponed as reports are prepared, and he remains in custody. Kyle Shanley, who had been held since being charged earlier in 2024, was granted bail and is due to appear in court alongside his brother in March. Detective Chief Inspector Laura Young described the incident as “shocking and violent” and acknowledged the profound heartbreak experienced by Gough’s family. She added, “Both Kevin and Kyle Shanley will now face the consequences of their actions.
