A university rugby fixture between Cardiff University and Swansea University was abruptly halted after nearly all 30 players became involved in a large-scale brawl during the closing stages of the match. The game, held at Dunvant RFC’s ground in Swansea, saw Cardiff leading 28-19 before tensions escalated.
The altercation reportedly began after a high tackle on a Cardiff player, which provoked anger among the visiting team and their supporters. The situation deteriorated as spectators started throwing beers at the players caught up in the fracas. The referee struggled to regain control as the physical confrontation unfolded near the touchline, with students watching from the stands.
British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS), the governing body for university sports in the UK, condemned the incident and expressed their disappointment over the abandonment of the game. They confirmed that the referee called off the match in the 78th minute and that an investigation would be undertaken in collaboration with both institutions and the Welsh Rugby Union. BUCS noted that since over 75% of the match had been played, the current result would stand unless disciplinary measures necessitate otherwise.
Both Swansea University and its Students’ Union issued a joint statement denouncing the behaviour as unacceptable and unrepresentative of their values. They also apologized for the distress caused to everyone affected, including Cardiff University, match officials, and the wider rugby community. Cardiff University echoed these sentiments, condemning the events and confirming ongoing cooperation with BUCS and Swansea University throughout the inquiry
