Helvellyn walkers stuck in snowy conditions rescued by teenagers

Two teenagers have received commendations for their quick thinking and preparedness after helping to rescue five individuals and their dog from a precarious situation on Helvellyn. Despite the challenging winter conditions, Caelan, aged 16, and Rowan, 15, encountered a group of adults who were ill-equipped for the mountain terrain, dressed only in jeans and trainers.

Recognizing the danger, the young rescuers carefully guided the group down the steep side of Striding Edge, using a zig-zag route to make the descent safer. They also took the time to cut steps into the snow, ensuring a more secure footing as they led everyone to the relative safety of Red Tarn below.

The Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team commended Caelan and Rowan for their calm demeanor and swift action, stating that the outcome could have been far worse without their intervention. The teenagers’ ability to stay composed under pressure was highlighted as a critical factor in the successful rescue.

Both Caelan, from Blackburn in Lancashire, and Rowan, hailing from Settle in North Yorkshire, have expressed plans to return to the Lake District for another hike over the coming weekend, undeterred by their recent mountain ordeal
