A man has admitted to the murder of a 23-year-old woman with whom he had a brief romantic relationship. Nottinghamshire Police reported that Adedapo Adegbola stabbed Stephanie Irons at her home on the evening of 21 October. The incident took place at Westdale Lane West in Mapperley, Nottinghamshire. Adegbola, who was reportedly motivated by the ending of their relationship, pleaded guilty to murder at Nottingham Crown Court and is scheduled for sentencing on 5 February.
Stephanie Irons was remembered by police as “a caring and compassionate young woman,” who was taken from her friends and family under tragic circumstances. Following the fatal attack, Adegbola fled the scene, leaving behind blood-stained trainers and a jumper on the streets near Mapperley and Carlton. He then traveled through Mansfield, Worksop, Sheffield, and eventually to Hull before returning to Nottingham, where he surrendered to authorities the following day. During subsequent police interviews, he chose not to comment.
During the court hearing, Judge Nirmal Shant KC informed Adegbola, 40, originally from Woodborough Road, Mapperley, that he faces a mandatory life sentence, with the only remaining issue being the minimum time he will serve. Several family members of Irons attended the court session, and prosecution confirmed that victim impact statements were being prepared. Police revealed that co-workers raised the alarm after receiving a series of troubling messages on the night of the attack.
Detective Inspector Stuart Barson spoke of the case’s devastating impact, describing the loss of a young woman taken under horrific circumstances. He highlighted that after the attack, Adegbola made no attempt to seek medical help for Irons and was solely focused on evading capture and disposing of evidence. The family of Stephanie Irons paid tribute to her as a “bright young star” whose future was painfully cut short, describing her as “a beautiful, loving and caring daughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend” with a compassionate nature and a big heart
