A tragic incident occurred at Helen’s Bay, a beach in County Down, where a woman in her 60s lost her life on Saturday afternoon. The emergency services were called around 13:00 GMT after three individuals encountered trouble in the water. The woman was swiftly transported to hospital but later died. Authorities have confirmed that her death is not being treated as suspicious.
The coastguard reported that several bystanders attempted to assist those in distress, with one person even entering the water to help. Emergency responders on the scene included two emergency crews, a rapid response paramedic, a Hazardous Area Response Team (Hart), a critical care paramedic, and an ambulance officer. Additional support came from a Coastguard helicopter, rescue teams from Bangor and Portaferry Coastguard, the Bangor RNLI inshore lifeboat, and the police.
In response to the incident, North Down MP Alex Easton expressed his gratitude to the members of the public who courageously tried to help as well as to the emergency services for their quick and professional response. He also conveyed his condolences to the family of the deceased, acknowledging the challenging time they are going through.
