Attempted murder arrest in Southampton after car driven at police

A 45-year-old man from Southampton, who was wanted on prison recall, has been taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder following an incident involving a vehicle driven toward police officers. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary reported that the vehicle, which was driving without its headlights, collided with two police cars while attempting to evade arrest on Paynes Road in Freemantle, Southampton, at around 00:30 GMT.

During the incident, the vehicle was deliberately driven at officers, though fortunately, no one sustained injuries. Alongside the attempted murder charge, the man is also being held on suspicion of dangerous driving and remains in police custody. The police located the man after carrying out inquiries related to a missing person report in the area.

In connection with the event, a 36-year-old woman from Ashford, Surrey, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking. She is currently being held in custody as investigations continue, according to Hampshire police.

The collision resulted in damage to both police cars involved, with one sustaining damage to the front and the other to the rear. The police force is continuing its inquiries into the matter
