Flooding hits parts of Scotland amid warning for more heavy rain

Northeast Scotland has been experiencing significant rainfall and flooding, prompting warnings of continued heavy downpours. The Met Office has placed a yellow alert in effect for rainfall impacting areas including parts of northeast Scotland, Angus, and Perth from midnight until 9 a.m. on Sunday. Concurrently, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has issued 12 flood warnings, primarily affecting Tayside, Dundee, and Angus regions. Due to flooding, the Coupar Angus Road leading to Alyth was temporarily shut down, and flood gates in Perth have been closed, according to mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser.

A spokesperson for the Met Office explained the situation, highlighting that a persistent period of wet weather has already brought over 100mm of rain in some places over the last three days. They added that another day of substantial and occasionally heavy rain is expected before the rainfall lessens on Saturday night. “Many places are likely to see a further 20-30mm of rain, and a few spots could see 50mm,” the spokesperson noted. Snow is forecast at elevations above 400-500 meters, with rain remaining at lower levels.

Officials have advised residents in the impacted areas to evaluate their flood risk and take appropriate safety measures. In response to the adverse weather, ScotRail has implemented speed restrictions on trains traveling between Aberdeen and Inverness, resulting in slower journeys. Additionally, the railway line toward Dundee was obstructed briefly by a fallen tree, though the obstruction has since been removed.

Further south in England and Wales, a yellow weather warning for rain and wind is active until 10 p.m. on Saturday, covering southwest England and southern Wales. The heavy rain and strong winds expected in this region are predicted to ease by Saturday morning. Earlier this week, heavy rainfall caused travel disruptions across Scotland, with flooding affecting many roads. Firefighters in Aberdeenshire assisted three individuals stranded in their vehicles due to the floods. Addressing the situation, the Scottish government’s Resilience Room convened on Thursday, chaired by Justice Secretary Angela Constance, who urged the public to heed flood alerts, weather updates, and travel notices
