Philip Young, a former Conservative councillor, has admitted to a series of sexual offences against his ex-wife over a span of 13 years. Among the charges to which he pleaded guilty are multiple counts of rape, as well as other offences including administering a substance with intent to stupefy and voyeurism. Despite these admissions, Young denied allegations involving indecent images of children and possessing extreme pornographic material.
Young, aged 49 and once representing the Covingham and Nythe wards on Swindon Borough Council between 2007 and 2010, was arrested in 2024, the same year he and Joanne Young finalized their divorce. His guilty pleas covered offences that reportedly occurred from 2010 through 2023. The charges relating to indecent imagery pertain to incidents alleged to have taken place in and around 2024, to which Young has entered not guilty pleas. His ex-wife, Joanne Young, has waived her anonymity and was present in court during the proceedings.
In addition to Young, four other men face charges connected to sexual offences against Joanne Young, all of whom pleaded not guilty at Winchester Crown Court. These individuals include Norman Macksoni, Richard Wilkins, Dean Hamilton, Connor Sanderson Doyle, and Mohammed Hassan. While some await further court dates or have yet to enter pleas for certain charges, the group includes accusations ranging from rape to sexual assault and assault by penetration. One additional defendant, charged with serious sexual offences, is scheduled to appear in court at a later time.
Wiltshire Police Detective Superintendent Geoff Smith acknowledged Joanne Young’s “incredible bravery” throughout the case, highlighting the significance of Young’s admissions. The Crown Prosecution Service described the evidence presented as “thorough and compelling.” Following the hearing, Philip Young was remanded into custody. The other accused men were released on conditional bail and are expected to stand trial in October. Additionally, police have appealed to the public for help in identifying a man linked to the investigation, describing him as having a large build, scarring on the back of his head, and a distinctive chest tattoo.
