George Mitchell, Chloe’s father, voiced his anguish over the postponement, explaining that further delays only prolong the family’s suffering. The strike, which started on January 5th, is understood to be impacting at least five murder trials, including that of Natalie McNally, a victim who was 15 weeks pregnant when she was killed in December 2022. The disruption has prevented crucial legal processes from moving ahead, leaving families like Chloe’s in an agonizing state of limbo.
Justice Minister Naomi Long acknowledged the grave consequences of the strike and expressed hope for a swift resolution. She conveyed her intention to meet with the Mitchell family and confirmed ongoing intensive efforts to settle the dispute with the Criminal Bar Association (CBA). Long emphasized the significant harm the industrial action is causing, calling the situation both upsetting and frustrating given the trauma already endured by the families affected. She also mentioned putting forward proposals aimed at addressing the CBA’s concerns while responsibly managing public finances.
The CBA, while recognizing the negative impact of their strike, described their action as a “last resort” and urged the Department of Justice to engage with them in good faith and with urgency. Meanwhile, Chloe’s family, including her aunt Linda McDowell, have pleaded earnestly for an agreement to be reached. Linda described the situation as “devastating” and said the ongoing delays are compounding their grief. George shared how the uncertainty and postponements have prevented his wife, Georgina, from finding any semblance of normalcy, explaining the emotional toll has been overwhelming.
