Birmingham doctor in court accused of sex assaults on patients

A physician has appeared before the court facing allegations involving over 40 counts of sexual assault, with victims including hospital patients and children. Nathaniel Spencer stands accused of committing these offenses against 38 patients at two hospitals: Royal Stoke University Hospital and Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley. The alleged incidents reportedly took place between 2017 and 2021.

Spencer, who is 38 years old and resides on Great Hampden Street in Birmingham, made his initial court appearance at the North Staffordshire Justice Centre. After the hearing, he was granted conditional bail and is scheduled to appear next at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on 20 February. Among the alleged victims, some were under the age of 13 when the offenses occurred.

During his brief hearing, Spencer, dressed in a grey suit and white shirt, responded only to questions regarding his address and date of birth. The case was presided over by District Judge Joseph O’Connor. It was noted that Spencer had previously worked as a junior doctor, or resident doctor, for the University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust from August 2017 until August 2020. Afterward, he took a placement as a resident doctor at The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, where he worked from August 2020 until April 2021.

The charges brought against Spencer are extensive and detailed. They include 15 counts of sexual assault, 17 counts of assault by penetration, nine counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, three counts of assaulting a child under 13 by penetration, and one count of attempted assault by penetration. The case continues as the investigation proceeds and Spencer awaits his next court date
