The principal of the Royal School Armagh in County Armagh has confirmed that those believed to be involved in the creation of AI-generated explicit images have been identified. Graham Montgomery, who leads the school, addressed parents in a letter on Monday stating that the school has identified both the individuals whose images were manipulated as well as those allegedly responsible. He described the behavior as “shocking and without excuse” and noted that the number of victims is limited to the “single figures.”
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has confirmed that an investigation into the matter is currently in progress. Reports indicate that the images were produced using artificial intelligence technology and then circulated among some students. Contrary to earlier reports suggesting “potentially dozens of girls” were targeted, Montgomery clarified that the actual number of affected teenagers is in the single digits. While acknowledging the significant impact on the victims, he expressed hope that this information would help prevent widespread alarm throughout the school community.
Montgomery mentioned that the school first became aware of the situation on Thursday, 8 January, and promptly referred the issue to the relevant authorities. He reassured parents and the wider school community that safeguarding procedures remain firmly in place to protect the well-being of all pupils. The PSNI added that local officers are actively working with the school authorities and are in contact with the parents or guardians of those affected.
Addressing the emotional toll on students, Montgomery emphasized that this has been a particularly difficult period for those whose images were manipulated. He encouraged everyone to remember that teenagers are involved and urged restraint from speculation and comments, especially on social media platforms.
