Coroner rules Labour politician Hefin David took his own life

A coroner has determined that Welsh Labour politician Hefin David died by suicide. The 47-year-old was discovered unresponsive at his home in Nelson, located in Caerphilly county, on August 12 of the previous year. David had served as the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Caerphilly since 2016.

Senior coroner Caroline Saunders, in her official inquest record, stated that David “took his own life by hanging” at his residence. The cause of death was confirmed as asphyxia due to hanging. During the initial inquest hearing at Gwent Coroner’s Court, it was revealed that David’s identity was confirmed at the scene by his sister. Notably, he was just one day away from his 48th birthday.

First Minister Eluned Morgan spoke highly of David, calling him a “truly remarkable human being”. She further praised him as “an outstanding politician, warm and enthusiastic and a great communicator – especially on behalf of his constituents,” adding, “He will be greatly missed.” Similarly, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also offered his condolences, referring to David as a “powerful voice for the people of Wales.
