Mum meets rescuers who saved baby from burning car in Merthyr Tydfil

A mother experienced a terrifying moment when her car caught fire with her nine-month-old baby inside, but thanks to the quick actions of two strangers, both were saved. Alex McClean, from Ebbw Vale in Blaenau Gwent, had been driving along the A465 near Merthyr Tydfil on Wednesday when smoke began to emerge from her vehicle. She pulled over immediately but found herself unable to open the other doors to reach her child, despite successfully escaping the car herself.

In a state of panic, Alex described her struggle, saying, “I was panicking trying to open the doors, I thought everything was just locked.” She shouted for help as vehicles passed by and tried without success to break a window using her keys. With the bonnet starting to discolor from the heat, she phoned the police for assistance.

Help arrived in the form of Wesley Beynon and his uncle Marc Willding, who stopped their vehicle to assist. Wesley broke into the car through the driver’s side door and unclipped the baby’s harness, while Marc carefully removed the child from the vehicle. Wesley recalled the intense situation, saying, “There were flames visible when we got in the car.” He admitted, “I could see them through the windscreen. It was pretty terrifying to be honest I’m not going to lie.”

Shortly after Lilah, the baby, was pulled to safety, the car was consumed by flames. Wesley reflected on the timing, stating, “Around 30 seconds to a minute later it was engulfed. We were in the right place at the right time.” Alex later expressed her gratitude, meeting with Wesley and Marc on Saturday to thank them for their bravery and quick thinking
